Empowering Kids Through AAC: How Speech and Occupational Therapy Support Communication

At Step Forward Therapy, we focus on giving every child the chance to communicate. For many, AAC devices are key tools. With AAC Awareness Month happening, we want to highlight how these devices, alongside speech and occupational therapy, help children express themselves and connect with the world.

What is AAC? AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. It includes everything from gestures and writing to communication boards to high-tech devices. We all use AAC everyday! However, when we discuss AAC as a communication method, we are referencing the tools we use that support kids who have trouble with speech or language development. Some kids use AAC to supplement their speech, while for others, it becomes their primary form of communication.

The Role of AAC in Speech Therapy For kids in our speech therapy programs, AAC can provide that bridge to language. Our therapists work with families to figure out what device or system works best. These devices let kids share their needs, feelings, and thoughts, helping them connect with peers, teachers, and family members.

How Occupational Therapy Enhances AAC Use Occupational therapists help kids use AAC devices more effectively by focusing on the fine motor skills needed to operate them. This might involve visual attention, hand-eye coordination, dexterity, or just helping kids position themselves to use the device confidently.

The Benefits of AAC for Children AAC can be a game changer for kids with speech and language challenges, offering benefits like:

  • More independence: Kids can express themselves better and with less frustration.
  • Social engagement: AAC devices allow kids to have conversations with others, improving social interactions.
  • Classroom support: AAC helps kids participate in school activities and share what they know.
  • Emotional expression: AAC gives kids a way to communicate their feelings, which can help with emotional regulation and building confidence.

Collaboration and Personalization We work closely with families to make sure AAC tools are customized to fit each child’s needs. We also provide ongoing support, adjustments as kids grow, and training for both the kids and their caregivers.

Helping Every Child Be Heard AAC isn’t just about speech—it’s about giving kids the chance to be heard and thrive. Through both speech and occupational therapy, we’re here to support kids on their communication journeys. This AAC Awareness Month, we celebrate the progress our kids are making and the important role AAC plays in their lives.
